Best bass lures: what to throw and where.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 23, 2026.

No lure is best everywhere, so pick by where the bass are. Weeds call for a frog, open water for a crankbait or swimbait, and the bottom for a jig or soft plastic. These are the types we sell, with the sizes from each listing.

Best for weeds and pads

A hollow frog. It slides over the surface and the hooks tuck up. We sell a frog in 12 colours and a set of five in a box.

Best for open water

A crankbait, jerkbait or swimbait. They cover water at a steady speed. Look at the lengths and weights: 8.5 cm and 15 g for the crankbait, 11.5 cm and 11 g for the minnow, 9 cm and 26 g for the jerkbait.

Best near the bottom

A skirted jig, a soft craw or a Ned rig. They are slow and stay in the strike zone. Our skirted jig is 10 g in eight colours.

Best for a first box

A frog, a crankbait, a soft plastic pack and a jig head cover most situations. A lure box keeps them together.

Questions people ask

What is the single best bass lure?

There isn't one. It depends on cover, depth and mood. A soft plastic on a jig head is the most versatile.

What colour should I use?

Natural colours in clear water and brighter ones in stained water is a common rule.

Do I need many lures?

A small box covering weeds, open water and the bottom is enough to start.
