How to tie a Carolina rig, step by step.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 23, 2026.

A Carolina rig keeps the weight on the main line and the bait on a separate leader behind it, so the bait floats up and moves on its own while the weight stays on the bottom. It covers a lot of water slowly.

What does the rig look like?

From the rod down: main line, a bullet weight, a bead, a barrel swivel, a leader and a hook with a soft bait. The bead protects the knot and clicks against the weight. The swivel stops the weight sliding down onto the leader.

How do I tie it?

Thread the weight and then the bead onto the main line, tie the line to one eye of the swivel with an improved clinch knot, tie the leader to the other eye, and finish with a hook. A leader of about 0.5 to 1 m is common.

What do we sell for it?

Stainless barrel swivels in a bag of 100, offset worm hooks in sizes 6 to 5/0, fluorocarbon-coated line for the leader and a choice of soft baits. We do not sell bullet weights or beads yet.

How do I fish it?

Cast, let the weight hit the bottom, then drag it slowly with the rod and pause. The bait trails behind. A strike usually feels like added weight.

Questions people ask

How long should the leader be?

About 0.5 to 1 m is common. A longer leader lets the bait float higher above the bottom.

Why use a swivel?

It joins the main line to the leader and stops the weight sliding onto the hook.

Can I use any soft bait?

Most soft baits work. Match the hook size to the bait.
