How to tie a Texas rig, step by step.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 23, 2026.

A Texas rig threads a soft plastic onto an offset hook and buries the hook point in the bait, so it slides through weeds and wood without snagging. A bullet weight slides on the line above the hook. It is one of the most used soft plastic rigs for bass.

What do I need?

An offset worm hook, a soft plastic such as a worm, craw or grub, and a bullet weight. We sell offset worm hooks in sizes 6 to 5/0 and several soft plastics. We do not sell bullet weights yet, so buy those locally.

How do I rig it?

Slide the bullet weight onto the line, then tie on the hook with an improved clinch knot. Push the hook point into the head of the bait and out of the side after about 6 mm. Pull the hook through, turn it, and push the point back into the body so it sits just under the skin. The bait should hang straight.

Which hook size do I choose?

Match the hook to the bait: a bigger bait needs a wider gap. Our hooks run from size 6 (25 mm long) to 5/0 (53 mm long), with the widths and lengths in the hook size chart.

How do I fish it?

Cast it to cover, let it sink on a slack line, then lift the rod tip and let it fall again. When the line moves or feels heavy, reel down and set the hook.

Questions people ask

Is a Texas rig weedless?

The hook point is buried in the bait, which keeps it from catching weeds. The point still pierces the bait when you set the hook.

What weight should I use?

Choose by depth and wind: a lighter weight falls slower, a heavier one gets down faster. We do not sell bullet weights, so check what your local shop stocks.

Which line suits a Texas rig?

Many anglers use braid or fluorocarbon. See our line guide for what each does.
