Fishing line types: braid, monofilament and fluorocarbon.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 22, 2026.

Three lines cover almost every job. Monofilament is the easy all-rounder, braid is thin and has almost no stretch, and fluorocarbon is hard to see in the water. We sell all three, and the sizes below come from the listings.

What is monofilament good for?

Monofilament is a single strand of nylon. It stretches a little, handles easily and costs less, so it suits beginners and general use. Ours is 100 m nylon in sizes 0.8 to 4.

What is braid good for?

Braid is woven from several strands, so it is thin for its strength and barely stretches, which helps you feel bites and set hooks at a distance. Ours is 4-strand in 100 m and 300 m spools, sizes 0.4 to 4.0.

What is fluorocarbon-coated line?

A line with a fluorocarbon coating, which is harder to see underwater than ordinary line. Ours is a 100 m sinking line in 0.2 to 0.5 mm diameters.

Which should I pick?

Start with monofilament. Move to braid for distance and sensitivity, and add a fluorocarbon-coated leader or line where fish are line-shy.

Questions people ask

Can I mix braid and mono?

Yes. Many anglers join braid to a mono or fluorocarbon leader with a knot such as the Palomar or a line-to-line knot.

Which line is best?

None is best for everything. It depends on the fish, the water and the lure. Monofilament is the simplest start.

Are braid and mono the same size?

No. Braid is much thinner than mono of the same strength, so a reel holds more of it.
