Spooling puts new line on the reel. Done right, the line lays flat and casts without loops. It takes about five minutes with a spool of line and a pencil or a helper to hold it.
What do I need?
A spinning reel, a spool of line, scissors or a line cutter, and tape if you use braid. We sell 4-strand braided line in 100 m and 300 m spools, 100 m nylon monofilament, and 100 m fluorocarbon-coated line.
How do I spool it?
Open the bail and thread the line through the first guide. Tie the line to the spool with an arbor knot, close the bail, and trim the tag. Set the line spool on the floor with its label up and wind steadily while keeping light tension with your fingers.
How full should the spool be?
Fill to about 3 mm below the lip. Too full and line springs off in loops; too low and casts lose distance.
Does braid need anything extra?
Braid can slip on a bare metal spool. A wrap of tape under the first turns, or a few turns of monofilament as backing, stops that.
Which reel sizes hold how much line?
Capacity depends on the reel size and the line diameter, and the listings do not give a capacity figure for ours, so check line diameter against the size you buy. The larger the model number, the more line the spool holds.

Questions people ask
Which way should the line come off the spool?
Place the spool so the line leaves it in the same direction the reel's bail turns. If the line twists as it goes on, flip the spool over.
How often should I change my line?
When it looks frayed, kinked or discoloured, or before a big trip. Heavy use wears line faster.
Do I need an arbor knot?
It is the usual way to fix line to a bare spool. A clinch-type knot also works.
