Fishing pliers, grippers and hook removers compared.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 22, 2026.

Unhooking a fish fast and safely takes a tool. Pliers grip a hook, a lip gripper holds the fish, a hook remover reaches a hook set deep, and a line cutter trims line. We sell each one, and the materials and sizes below come from the listings.

What should fishing pliers do?

Fishing pliers need a thin nose to reach a hook and a grip that works wet. Our curved nose pliers are stainless steel, 12.5 cm long, in blue, red or orange. The gripper and pliers set pairs a fish lip gripper with pliers so you can hold the fish and work the hook at once.

When do I need a hook remover?

When a hook is set past the lips, a T-handle remover slides down the line and pushes the hook free without your fingers near the teeth. Ours has a stainless steel shaft and a T handle, in 17 cm and 27 cm lengths.

Why a lip gripper?

A lip gripper clamps the fish's lower jaw so you can control it without squeezing the body. Our gripper and pliers set comes in black or orange. The floating grip is ABS plastic with a wrist lanyard, in small and large, in seven colours. Either one gives you a hand free for the camera or the pliers.

What about cutting line?

Nippers trim tag ends faster and cleaner than pliers. Our line cutter is stainless steel and plastic on a retractable lanyard, in five styles, and the fly knot tool includes clippers and a hook sharpener. Our folding fishing scissors have high-carbon steel blades and fold small, with a metal handle in gold or rose gold or a plastic one in red, blue or purple. Keep one clipped to your bag.
