Fishing tides and the best time to fish.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 22, 2026.

On tidal water, fish tend to feed when the water is moving, so many anglers plan around the rising or falling tide rather than the high or low itself. On any water, the low light around dawn and dusk is a popular time. No schedule guarantees fish, so treat tides and the clock as a starting point.

What do tides do for fishing?

A tide is the regular rise and fall of the sea. When it moves, it pushes bait along channels, points and structure, and fish often position themselves there to feed. At the very top or bottom the water is slack and can fish slower.

Where do I read tide times?

NOAA publishes predicted tides for US stations at tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov. Pick the station nearest your spot and note the high and low times for your day.

What is the best time of day to fish?

Many anglers fish early morning and evening, when the light is low and fish often feed nearer the surface. Overcast days can extend that window. If you have to fish midday, try deeper water or shade.

Do moon phases and solunar tables matter?

Solunar tables, which combine moon position and phase, are popular, but the evidence is mixed. Use them as one input alongside tide, weather and light, not as a rule.

Which lures suit moving water?

Choose by how deep the fish are. A jig-head paddle-tail swimbait and a sinking pencil stick bait work below the surface, and a popper works the top at first light. Carry a tackle box so you can switch quickly.

Questions people ask

Is high tide or low tide better for fishing?

It depends on the spot and the fish. Many anglers prefer the hours when the tide is moving, either rising or falling, over the slack at the top or bottom.

Do tides matter in lakes?

No. Lakes have no tide. Light, weather, wind and water temperature matter instead.

Where can I check the weather before I go?

The US National Weather Service forecast at weather.gov covers wind and rain for your area.
