Spinning reel sizes: what 1000 to 7000 means.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 22, 2026.

Spinning reels are sold by a size number. A lower number is a smaller, lighter reel that holds less line; a higher number is bigger and holds more. Our metal spinning reel comes in every size from 1000 to 7000, and the listing says the larger the model, the more line it winds.

Which spinning reel size do I need?

Match the reel to the rod and the line. The small sizes, 1000 to 2000, pair with light rods and thin line for small lures. The middle sizes, 3000 to 4000, are the general-purpose choice. The 5000 to 7000 sizes hold more and heavier line for bigger water and bigger lures.

What is the reel made of?

The listing describes a metal body, an aluminium alloy line cup with a chamfered edge for a smoother cast, and a chrome-plated line roller. It does not state the gear ratio, bearing count or drag figure, so we do not quote those.

Spinning reel or baitcasting reel?

A spinning reel hangs below the rod and is forgiving to cast. A baitcasting reel sits on top and is preferred by anglers who want more control with heavier lures, at the cost of learning to avoid overruns. Our baitcaster is low profile and comes in left-hand and right-hand versions, standard or micro.

Which baitcaster should I pick?

We sell two low-profile baitcasters, both in left-hand and right-hand versions. One lists a 7.2:1 gear ratio with a magnetic brake and an EVA handle; the other lists a metal spool and a 10 kg maximum drag. The listings do not state bearing counts, so we do not quote them.

Does the reel come with line?

No. The packing list is the reel only. We sell a 100 m spool of fluorocarbon-coated sinking line in 0.2 to 0.5 mm, 100 m nylon monofilament, and 4-strand braided line in 100 m or 300 m spools.

Questions people ask

Is size 3000 a good first reel?

Sizes 3000 and 4000 are the general-purpose middle of the range, so they suit a first setup for most lure fishing.

Does the pocket pen rod include a reel?

Yes. The pocket pen rod listing shows and describes a small reel with the rod.
