Baitcaster or spinning reel: which should you buy?.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 22, 2026.

A spinning reel hangs under the rod and is the easier one to cast, so it is the usual first reel. A baitcasting reel sits on top of the rod and gives more control with heavier lures, but it takes practice to stop the spool overrunning. We sell both, and the specs below are only the ones each listing states.

Which is easier to learn?

The spinning reel. The line leaves a fixed spool, so there is little to tangle. A baitcaster has a spool that turns as you cast, and the brake setting decides how much it overruns, so expect a few practice casts at a time.

Which suits heavier lures?

A baitcaster is the usual choice for heavier lures and for control over where the lure lands, which is why the spinning reel is the better fit for light lures on thin line.

What do our spinning reels list?

The metal spinning reel comes in every size from 1000 to 7000. The metal-cup spinning reel comes in 2000 to 7000, with a metal line cup and a folding metal handle that swaps left and right. Neither listing gives a gear ratio or a drag figure, so we do not quote one.

What do our baitcasters list?

The 7.2:1 baitcaster lists a 7.2:1 gear ratio, a brass main gear and pinion, a 12-step magnetic brake and a 10 kg maximum drag, in four colours and left or right hand. The other three are low-profile baitcasters in left-hand and right-hand versions; the listings mention a magnetic brake, or a metal spool and a 10 kg maximum drag.

Do I need a different rod?

The reel mounts to the rod's reel seat, so check that the rod you choose has a seat that fits. Our telescopic rods list a screw reel seat or an aluminium alloy one.

Questions people ask

Is a baitcaster harder to use?

Yes, at first. The spool turns as you cast, so the brake setting matters and a few practice casts help. A spinning reel is simpler.

Can I use a baitcaster left-handed?

Our baitcasters are sold in left-hand and right-hand versions, so choose the handle side you reel with.

Does the reel come with line?

No. The packing list is the reel only. See our braided, monofilament and fluorocarbon-coated line.
