Best baitcasting reel for beginners: what to look for.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 23, 2026.

A good first baitcasting reel has an adjustable brake, comes in your hand, and is a low-profile size you can control. We sell four baitcasters, and the figures below are the ones their listings state.

Why does the brake matter?

The brake controls how fast the spool spins on a cast, which is what prevents overruns. A magnetic brake is easy to adjust. Our 7.2:1 baitcaster lists a 12-step magnetic brake.

Which hand do I need?

Pick the handle side you reel with. Ours come in left-hand and right-hand versions.

What gear ratio?

A 7.2:1 ratio retrieves fast; it is listed on our 7.2:1 baitcaster. The other listings do not state a ratio.

Which of ours should I start with?

The 7.2:1 baitcaster lists the most: brass main gear and pinion, a 12-step magnetic brake and a 10 kg maximum drag. See also our guide to casting a baitcaster.
