Rod and reel combos: how to build one that matches.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 22, 2026.

A combo is a rod and a reel chosen to work together. You can buy them as a set or pair them yourself. The pairing matters more than the label: the reel's size and line should suit the rod's length and how you plan to fish. Here is how to match them, using what we sell.

Spinning or baitcasting combo?

A spinning combo is the easier start. A baitcasting combo suits heavier lures and gives more control, but needs practice to avoid overruns. Searches for baitcasting combos are common, but the reel is the part that decides the learning curve.

How do I match a reel to a rod?

Match the reel to the rod's length and the weight of the lure and line you plan to use. Small sizes, 1000 to 2000, suit short rods and light lures. Larger sizes, 3000 and up, suit longer rods and heavier line.

Do you sell a ready-made combo?

Yes. The 2.4 m telescopic rod and spinning reel combo comes with a 12+1 axis metal-head reel in the 3000 or 5000 size. The rod has 8 sections and packs to 44 cm.

What rods do we sell?

The telescopic fishing pole runs from 1.8 to 3.6 m with a straight or a gun handle. The 1 m pocket pen rod comes in five sections and includes a small reel. The carbon telescopic rod is 1.8 to 2.7 m with a cork grip and an aluminium alloy reel seat. The longer telescopic rod is 3.0 or 3.6 m with ceramic guide rings.

What reels do we sell?

Three spinning reels, in sizes 1000 to 7000 (two of them) and 2000 to 7000, four baitcasters in left or right hand, and a mini round reel for ice fishing.

Do I need line?

Yes. Our spinning reels and baitcasters ship without line. Add a spool of braided, monofilament or fluorocarbon-coated line, then see our guide to spooling a reel.

Questions people ask

Is a combo cheaper than buying separately?

Not always. Pairing the rod and reel yourself lets you choose the size and hand you want.

Do your reels come with line?

No. The packing list is the reel only.

Which combo is best for a beginner?

A spinning reel in the 2000 to 3000 size on a rod of about 1.8 to 2.4 m is a common, forgiving start.
