Ice fishing gear: rod, reel and lures for a first season.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 23, 2026.

Ice fishing is vertical fishing: you drop a lure through a hole and jig it. That means a short rod, a small reel and small jigging lures. Searches for ice fishing gear climb every autumn. We sell a 60 cm ice rod, a mini round reel and jigging lures, and the details below come from the listings.

What rod do I need?

A short one, because you fish over a hole. Our ice rod is 60 cm in two sections with a cork handle and two interchangeable tips of 31 cm. The packing list is the rod only.

What reel suits ice fishing?

A small reel that holds a little light line. Our mini round reel is 9 x 7 cm with a metal body and feet, in red or blue.

Which lures work through the ice?

Small jigging lures that you lift and drop. Ours has a treble hook below and a single hook at each end, in 4 g, 8 g, 10 g and 17 g, in fifteen colours. Heavier weights sink faster, so pick by the depth you fish.

What line should I use?

Light line, as the fish are often small. See our monofilament and fluorocarbon-coated lines, and check your state's rules for ice fishing.

What else should I bring?

Check ice thickness before you walk on it, and bring a way to open a hole, a skimmer for slush and warm clothing. We do not sell those, so follow your state's safety guidance.
