How to fish a Ned rig: the small mushroom jig head setup.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 23, 2026.

A Ned rig is a small mushroom-shaped jig head with a short soft plastic that stands up off the bottom. You fish it slowly and let it sit. It is a finesse rig for fish that ignore bigger lures.

What do I need?

A mushroom jig head and a short soft bait. Our Ned rig jig heads come five to a bag in 2.8, 3.5, 4.6 and 7 g. Cut or choose a soft bait of about 6 to 8 cm.

How do I rig it?

Push the hook point into the nose of the soft bait and out through its back, so the bait sits straight on the head. The flat head lets the bait stand tail-up on the bottom.

How do I fish it?

Cast, let it sink to the bottom, then drag or hop it a short way and pause for several seconds. Most bites come when it is still.

Which weight should I use?

Use the lightest head that still reaches the bottom: 2.8 or 3.5 g in shallow, calm water, and 4.6 or 7 g for depth or wind.
