Topwater lures: frogs, poppers, mice and prop baits.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 22, 2026.

Topwater lures work on or just under the surface, so the take happens where you can see it. A frog or mouse floats over weed and cover, a popper spits water when you twitch it, and a prop bait churns with a spinning tail. We sell all four, and the specs below come from each listing.

What is a frog lure for?

A frog lure is shaped to be worked over weed beds and lily pads where other lures would snag. Ours is ABS plastic with a single hook and a tassel skirt, in twelve colours. Hollow-body frogs and soft frogs behave differently; ours is a hard-bodied plastic frog with a skirt.

How is a popper different from a prop bait?

A popper has a cupped, open mouth that pushes water and makes a pop when you twitch the rod. A prop bait has a small propeller blade that spins and churns on a straight retrieve. Our popper has an open mouth in six styles; our prop-tail lure is 9.5 cm with a spinning tail blade and three hooks.

When would I use a mouse lure?

A mouse lure is a surface lure with a long tail, worked slowly so it leaves a wake. Ours is ABS plastic with a single hook and a long tail, in pink, grey or green. Like the frog, it is built for fishing over and around cover rather than open water.

What about a jointed prop bait?

A jointed prop bait adds a hinged body to the propeller tail, so the lure swings as well as churns. Ours is ABS, 10.5 cm and 17 g, in two sections with a propeller tail, in five colours. It is the heaviest topwater we sell, which helps with casting distance.

Questions people ask

Do topwater lures float?

Frogs, mice and poppers are surface lures by design. The listings do not state a buoyancy figure, so we do not quote one; the 17 g jointed prop bait is heavier than the others and casts further.

What hooks do they have?

The frog and mouse lures have a single hook; the prop-tail lure has three hooks. Treble hooks are sharp: handle them with care.

How many colours are there?

Twelve for the frog, six styles for the popper, three for the mouse, five patterns for the prop-tail lure and five for the jointed prop bait.
