How to tie a wacky rig for stick baits and worms.

A buying guide from Fishing Lures Co. Specs come from each product listing. Updated October 23, 2026.

A wacky rig hooks a soft stick bait or worm through its middle so both ends fall and wiggle. It is simple, needs no weight and works well in calm water. The hook is left exposed.

What do I need?

A hook and a soft stick bait or worm. We sell offset worm hooks in sizes 6 to 5/0 and soft plastics such as grubs and 20-piece sets. Pick a hook that fits the bait.

How do I rig it?

Find the middle of the bait and push the hook through it from one side to the other, with the point showing. Some anglers add a small rubber ring to protect the bait.

How do I fish it?

Cast it out, let it fall on a slack line and watch the line. Twitch the rod tip now and then and let it fall again. Fish often take it on the drop.

When does a wacky rig suit?

Calm, open water where a slow, natural fall works. The exposed hook snags weeds, so it is for open water.
